Theodore will ONLY be adopted to an expereinced and structured doberman home. Absolutly no first time Doberman owners will be considered. Adopters will also be required to have him enrolled in training classes before taking him home.
Physical appearance: Theodore is a 3 and a half year old male Doberman with cropped ears and a docked tail. He is a euro Dobe and is on the larger side.
Personality: Handsome, smart, sweet and playful, this boy has it all. Theodore is a loving and gentle boy with his family that lets his mom wipe his paws when he comes in from playing outside and Dremel his nails. He is protective and will bark at other dogs on the street and when out for a walk if those dogs bark first. Carrying something he values highly like a ball or good treats will help distract him. He loves people and does well with older kids, but has a strong prey drive so no cats or small animals. No small kids due to his large size as he would easily knock one over. Speaking of prey drive, this guy LOVES his ball. Playing fetch is his happy place so a big fenced in yard is a must. He will fetch for hours given the chance. Theodore needs a home with a lot of boundaries, structure and rules or he will create his own. He is not the dog for a family looking for a couch potato. He needs a highly active home that understands the importance of training to make sure he is happy. Since he is having issues with the other dogs in the home, he wil need to be an only dog.
Why he’s in rescue: Theodore has been loved by his family since he was a puppy, but he has recently started attacking the other male dog in the home. His family is making the very difficult decision to find him a new home so that both dogs can be happy.
Manners and training: His family has done an incredible job training him and he knows a ton of commands. He can sit, lay down, stay, wave hello, spin right, spin left, circle around you, go through your legs and heels perfectly on a leash. He is so good on a leash that he can be walked by a 12 year old so long as she carries a ball and treats in case they come across any barking dogs. Interestingly enough, Theodore really hates skateboards and will try and grab one from someone riding it, so no kids that skateboard in his new home. He is not destructive in the home and does not need to be crated, but he is crate trained. So long as his new family makes sure to keep him active, and set boundaries and rules he will be an incredible dog. For example, he knows he has to sit before he goes anywhere, otherwise he doesn’t get leashed to go with them. He sits and waits before his family starts scooping his kibble for dinner, and does not eat until we say so. These are small rules, but they really help with his behavior. Getting him to sit and wait before going out for a walk also helps with his anxiety, because he can can get too excited/too nervous right before going out, but getting him to be patient and obedient helps with being overstimulated beforehand.
Vetting: All our dogs are brought up to date on rabies, Bordetella, and combo, negative for intestinal parasites and heartworms, neutered and microchipped before adoption.
